August 10, 2025 - May Day, May Day! What a disaster.

I suppose one can blame the hot weather, the rain and just about 10 other things, but when all is said and done, I have failed again in keeping up with the weeds in the garden.

What a disaster I am facing as we get into the final two months of growing veggies, with the weeds, once again, winning out, no questions asked.

I did have a great harvest period where I was able to share lots of veggies with friends, neighbors and relatives, but that doesn’t mean much when I am down the homestretch with mostly weeds, six feet tall.

To get an idea of how fast these weeds grow, I cut my lawn at least twice a week and often times, three times a week. Between the humid, wet weather and my well water sprinkler system, the grass has remained nice and green and continues to grow leaps and bounds.

I am not complaining, rather, just admitting I can’t keep up as my garden looks more like some neglected back alley, rather than a disciplined, clean and weed free garden.

Since my struggles in getting the garden rid of weeds, I decided to pull out the leeks, enabling me to make potato-leek soup, and plant some pickle seedlings. It is probably too late in the season for the pickles, but we will see how it goes. The raised bed location makes for easy weeding and watering and watching to see how the pickles develop over the next few months.
